Karen Hutley – Assistant Principal

Karen Hutley grew up on various council estates in London, then Glasgow, coming back to England at the age of 10. She sat the 11+ exam and was successful in gaining a place at a grammar school in Lancashire. Whilst she thoroughly enjoyed PE, English and MFL, she was less keen on science and maths and did not behave very well in these lessons. It was one teacher who believed in her who made her realise that she could go to university and have dreams, and this teacher turned her attitude to learning around, inspiring her to go on and do ‘A’ levels and go to a Russell Group University (Manchester Victoria) to study German, gaining a BA Hons degree at the end of the four years.

In 1994 she began a PGCE in German and PE and managed to establish a (winning!) girls’ rugby team whilst on placement in Warrington. In 1995 she qualified with a PGCE as a secondary teacher and took up the post of MFL teacher at the Blue Coat School in Oldham. After two years she moved for a promotion to Saddleworth School and Language College, also in Oldham. Whilst in the post of 2nd in MFL, Karen became an SSAT Lead Practitioner for MFL for NW England and also became a member of the TES MFL panel. Her work on CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) saw her awarded the status of SSAT Advanced Lead Practitioner, thanks to her work with MFL on a national level.

In 2012 Karen saw the post for Curriculum Leader for MFL advertised at MEA and the rest is history! As Curriculum Leader she very quickly saw GCSE MFL go from not being taught at all to being the most popular GCSE option, with entries for GCSE German being triple the national average. Whilst at the Academy she has also been shortlisted for the national German “Teacher of the Year” award, and has worked tirelessly in an SLE capacity to support other schools, both locally and regionally, with MFL.

Karen began her role as Assistant Principal in September 2017, with an emphasis on student welfare and personal development, and is thoroughly enjoying the challenges which the role brings. Outside of school Karen enjoys spending time with her family and is an avid follower of Wigan RLFC!
